Home mold inspection

The vast amount of water damage caused by Hurricane Sandy is not to be forgotten and for some, even to this day, Sandy is still a lingering threat.

Many people whose  homes were flooded are now facing a terrible new enemy in their home: Adverse air quality (Mold)

Associate Professor and Program Director Jack Caravanos at CUNY School of Public Health explains the impact of mold:

Adverse Air Quality (Mold) Causes Health Problems and Structural Damage

Home air quality assessments (mold testing) can help determine adverse air quality in its early stages and can help prevent your home or building from becoming “sick.”

Elevated amounts of molds and fungi can cause allergic reactions and respiratory problems when inhaled. When this is the case, it is extremely important to have your home tested by an air quality assessor professional if you suspect that the interior of your home may be contaminated.

Molds and fungi not only make a person feel sick, they can also start to deteriorate sheet rock and wood framing members by causing wood to decay and rot. Water is the main ingredient that sustains these natural occurring organisms to grow and wreak havoc in homes where they are unwanted.

The first and most important step is to dry out the affected area as quickly as possible, ideally 24 hours or less before the naturally ubiquitous spores come to life. When the spores (hatch) into full blown molds, mildews and  fungi, they reproduce rapidly with the aid of  consistent moisture.

If these nasty organisms are observed, do not disturb the colonies because by doing so they release more spores into the air and are distributed by air movement.

A most important note…

TURN OFF OR BLOCK AIR VENTS OR PASSAGEWAYS THAT CAN DISTRIBUTE THE SPORES TO OTHER PARTS OF THE HOME AND HEATING/COOLING DUCT WORK WHICH MOVES AIR THROUGHOUT THE BUILDING.

Always have mold remediation done by a licensed professional to perform the disinfecting process.
